Really loved this graphic novel! It was the first one to really bring back Roller Girl vibes in a while. I loved the portrayal of being one of the only kids of color in a small Texas town, the Thai community, and a friendship surviving the ups and downs of middle school. The cheerleading tryouts were anxiety-inducing but also super inspiring and I loved how strong Christina was on the other side of them.

In this graphic novel memoir, author Christina Soontornvat tells the story of cheerleading tryouts in small-town Texas during her seventh grade year. This is more than your typical coming-of-age novel, as the author unpacks the racism of her conservative town as an Asian-American and her Muslim friend.

I really loved this story! There's a surprising amount of depth for a children's book while still keeping the content accessible for tweens. I enjoyed the illustrations. Fans of Raina Telgemeier or Shannon Hales' "Friends" series should definitely check this book out.
