This graphic novel memoir is well-paced, engaging, and full of heart. The cultural elements make this stand out from many other graphic novels about girls adjusting to middle school, and the art conveys emotion well and tells the story in a clear, sequential way that is easy to follow. The cheerleading tryouts are ultimately the backdrop to a deeper story of personal growth, and the powerful messages are inherent to the narrative without feeling tacked-on to make a point. This will appeal to people who enjoy character-driven graphic novels.
