Many unexpected moments and the best Maigret so far (as I read them in order). The bizarre dynamic between Maigret and his suspect sets this one apart.

I have read the first five Maigret’s and I have to say this is the point where Simenon really gets started. The story makes sense from the start and there is a clear direction. He has found his groove and we are on the road. The final chapter of summing up is a masterpiece and I throughly enjoyed it. On to the next one!

One of the interesting features of Simenon's writing is that he doesn't like "formula" writing. So he varies the way he tells his stories, and this one is a good illustration of that. This book is also a compromise between the more complex cases such as [b:The Late Monsieur Gallet|18114334|The Late Monsieur Gallet (Maigret, #3)|Georges Simenon|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1372679444s/18114334.jpg|1043556] and the simpler cases such as [b:The Grand Banks Café|20949483|The Grand Banks Café|Georges Simenon|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1394405763s/20949483.jpg|135747]. The basic notion that he solves his crimes by understanding the people involved remains the constant, and here it is particularly striking as he spends several days in the company of the killer. A great contribution to the Maigret series.
