The Mary Poppins of the book reminds me more of myself, even more than the stage musical.

One of the many books Mom read to me and my Sister Jo to keep us from fighting at lunch time. Since we weren't "bus kids", we walked home and had lunch. Mom read to us great books so we would eat in silence.

If I had read this when I was a child, I would never have even wanted to see the movie. The Mary Poppins in this book has very little resemblance to the Julie Andrews movie version. The Mary Poppins in the book is always cross and often rude, not a lovable character at all. I actually couldn't understand how so many people/creatures (Bert, Uncle Albert, animals in the trip around the world) loved her because she wasn't nice at all. Although after reading this book, I can understand "Saving Mr. Banks" better. P.L. Travers seemed to be a serious, cross kind of woman herself.

I found parts of this book very dark and supernaturally scary for children. Some of the episodes appeared in the movie; i.e. Mary and Bert jumping into the sidewalk drawings and the ceiling tea party at Uncle Albert's. Some didn't make the cut; i.e. the trip around the world with Mary's compass and the visit from Maia. Overall, I did not enjoy this book at all and have absolutely no interest in reading any of the others.

The saving grace for me was the vocal performance of Sophie Thompson, who did a superb job in this audiobook.

I really expected more from this. I suppose I’ve heard it being talked up too much and was therefore unable to capture the magic of the story properly.
