In Tempest Runner, the story of Lorna Dee and her ascent to a leader in the Nihil unfolds. The audio narration includes a full cast along with Star Wars music and sound effects.
There were a few times voices were a bit confusing. Our main character, Lorna, and prominent side character, Tasia, both sounded very similar that it was hard to keep them straight for the first half. During battle scenes, things would happen so fast it was sometimes not easy to tell who was talking to who. The sound effects for fighting could get confusing as well--was that a punch, a kick, did someone just fall? At the beginning, because you don't get any names at the start, its not an easy script to follow.
Lorna's struggles were well-developed throughout the narrative. I was rooting for "Sal" and her journey of self-discovery. But then we got to the end chapters, which left me unsatisfied with the plot's direction,. Thus, it felt like the past 6-plus hours were slightly wasted.
I think the story would have worked better as a novel. With the jumps back and forth in time through Lorna's life and the high-stakes action scenes, more details to timelines and places would have been a welcome addition.

and it kinda felt like we went nowhere with her development other than one act of kindness. Perhaps it would have felt more satisfying if she hadn't gone back to the Nihil and the same organization that tried to control herI think the story would have worked better as a novel. Oof, easily the worst entry into the High Republic so far. The story was decent, if unnecessary, but the audio performances were... subpar. The lead character was breathy but rough, grunted constantly, and just not pleasant to hear. Several characters in the same scenes sounded almost identical. There were time jumps with absolutely no indication. Just uncharacteristically sloppy for a Star Wars audio. Wish I had read the book instead.

I’ve always loved Caven Scott’s dialogue so it was fun to see it in a drama format. However, this was my least favorite book of THR so far. The pacing felt odd and the emotional journey of the character didn’t really feel natural to me. The script is well acted yet I got annoyed with all of the huffing and puffing pretty quickly. It’s pretty brutal in some places.
5/10 Stars (or 2.5 on this system) for me, but I also don’t love antagonist POVs in general so this is my very personal rating.
