The hype is incredibly well deserved. Obsessed, haven't been able to stop thinking about. The story is set up in a way I imagine results from the one-woman play origin, with some chapters feeling like little scenes that illustrate the story from the unique perspective of who she was at that point in her life. Her growth is set up in the nature of the narration, as she goes from adoring and deeply anxious child to bitter and mentally ill teen and young adult. It's reflective and poignant without being too expository.
