I've got to say that this was such a strange book. It follows Lord Ximen Nao who gets executed during the Red Revolution so that people could divide the land among farmers. Part of the story follows Lan Lian, Ximen's ex-servant who is an independent farmer despite the community pressuring him to be a commune farmer.
We see this through Ximen Nao's eyes as a Donkey and Ox. The other lives were as a Monkey, Pig and Dog which follows Lan Lian's sons and grandson more closely. I've got to agree with the other reviewer Fishface, there is just so much mention of dick in this novel that it's just not that great. I get all the balls mentions with the medicinal properties with that one character but it's just very gratuitous.
I really enjoyed the Donkey and Ox chapters, particularly the stubbornness of the Ox that stayed put even when a fire blazed. Stars off for the other likes ahaha. He sure did have a lofty sense of self in all the lives where he became a defacto leader as a Pig and Dog. I liked Ximen Dog but Lan Lian's sons really disappointed me.
I thought Lan Lian's death was fitting for Taoism, do not mourn because he will return to the chaotic mass and be reborn somehow.

The story spans 1950-2000, following the main character through several incarnations as he observes what happens to his friends, family, and the people from his village through the changes implemented in China during that time (Communist reforms, the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution, and the aftermath of those changes). This approach to writing about this period in China was refreshing and entertaining.

Mo Yan go one sentence without mentioning dick challenge was well and truly failed.
I'm sad to admit that Frog seems to have been the one hit wonder of Mo Yan's work for me. I'll give others a try in the future, but this and red sorghum didn't have the same shine - there was far too much melodrama.
Life And Death Are wearing me out has a few positives- I liked the presence of the author in interjections and as a character in Pig Frolics onwards. The episode where he pissed on the generator fan belt and broke it was quite funny (and maybe true to life ;)). Also the use of his visits to the underworld, and bitching at the specteral attendants is amusing and a cool plot device- although underutilised in my opinion. However if you are looking for something consistently paced this is not it. The book started strong with the story of Ximen Nao's first reincarnation as a donkey, then as an ox. However it slowed to a crawl with the bloated (lol) story of his life as a pig - a good third of the book was devoted to what often amounted to just being descriptions of the sex lives of pigs. I didn't find much of it funny so it became a slog. Then, in the last 30 pages I was hit with a barrage of death-shocking revelation-suicide-marriage-death-marriage etc that barely had time to impact before the novel concluded. A shame.
Also the biggest flaw of all... so much penis. Phallic symbolism and presence in spades. An abundance of cock. Dear god let there be one chapter without someone's testicle being eaten. I jest, but seriously it was getting annoying.
Ya know what though I've not lost hope yet for another gem like Frog. Maybe I'll try Republic of wine next...

Mo Yan, un mare scriitor chinez contemporan se spune. M-am avântat cu încredere către unul dintre romanele lui mari, atât la modul figurat, cât și la cel literal fiindcă are peste 700 de pagini, scris în 42 de zile și apărut în anul 2006. Tot în acel an, Mo Yan aseamănă romanul mare cu "o balenă ce rătăcește solitară în adâncul mărilor, respiră răsunător și greoi, se împreunează rostogolitoare-ntre valuri și naște însângerată și măreață". Șase ani mai târziu, Mo Yan avea să ia Premiul Nobel pentru Literatură.
Ximen Nao, unul dintre protagoniștii și naratorii acestui roman, este un țăran avut, bun și generos, căruia îi sunt luate averile în timpul uneia dintre reformele lui Mao și este pe dată omorât. În iad își strigă nedreptatea, rămâne demn în fața cruzimii demonilor și îl înfruntă pe regele Yama, stăpânul Lumii de dincolo. Yama, până la urmă, este și zeu al dreptății și îi ascultă nemulțumirea, îi va oferi șansa să se întoarcă la viață, iar Ximen Nao este mulțumit că este lăsat să afle motivul pentru care a fost ucis. Resentimente și întrebări se învârt prin mintea omului.
Doar că Yama are alte planuri și Ximen Nao se trezește măgar, la căpătâiul său fiind una dintre concubinele sale, acum soție a fiului său de suflet. Își vede copiii care acum nu mai sunt ai lui. Ca măgar trăiește și observă oamenii, îi recunoaște și se tot întreabă de ce a fost ucis, însă o șansă la viață nu trebuie irosită și se va bucura din plin de ea. Și nu se sfârșește totul aici, căci după ce moare nu ajunge om, ci din nou și din nou, animal după animal, strigăt după nedreptate cu strigăt după nedreptate, liniște după resemnare, Ximen Nao vede prin mai mulți ochi mai mult de jumătate de secol trăit de poporul chinez, de oamenii lui și de urmașii lui, la care se întoarce de fiecare dată. Oare aceasta a fost judecata de care a avut parte, viața?

Un roman complex, care desi pare cinic si plin de umor, duce cu sine o tonalitate grava de la inceput pana la final. Ultima parte insa mi s-a parut precipitata, autorul parea sa se fi plictisit de propriile lui personaje. Mi-a placut sa descopar similitudinile culturale intre romani si chinezi, trecand prin diversele etape ale comunismului.

Təsadüfdən elə bu kitabı oxumağa başlamazdan qabaq "Axırıncı aşırım" kinosuna baxmışdım. Kommunizmə qarşı dirənən kənd insanı portreti + reinkarnasiya (Kitabın adından da gördüyü kimi). Fikir olaraq yaxşıdır, amma çox uzadıb (Baxmayaraq ki, 43 günə kompütersiz, sırf qələmlə yazıb). Murakamisayağı bir şey olsa, daha çox bəyənərdim. Nəticə etibarilə daha bir mənə xitab eləməyən Nobelli yazar tanımış oldum ("Saydam turp" kitabını saymasaq).
