Novella featuring Kaye Burkholder, chief of police in Painters Mill, OH. In this short story, Alma and her friend, Irene, are heading to a party at an abandoned farm on Friday, the 13th. Kate and her team get wind of the party and go to check on things. While waiting for confirmation from the owner that the party-goers have permission to be on the property, a truck hits a pole and knocks out electricity to the town. Kate investigates but is called back to the farm by Alma’s boyfriend, Aden, who has allegedly found Alma unconscious and bodies on the barn floor.
I found this short story to be very obvious as to the suspect and the motive related to the crime. Still, a quick read and short view into the daily life of a small town cop.

Only the Lucky (Kate Burkholder #8.5) by Linda Castillo

Kate Burkholder, Chief of Police of tiny Painters Mill, is having a relatively safe time at the moment. This short story has Kate investigating the brutal assault of a teenage Amish girl at Amish "rager" party. (Are Amish "rager" parties a thing?) At the same time that the rager is going on, Painters Mill loses it's electricity, causing a variety of other problems for Kate and her officers. It's nice that Kate doesn't have time to get involved in body and/or vehicle battering action. Just plain old police procedural type work where Kate stays healthy and she and her beau don't have anything to argue about. I did figure out the person who assaulted the girl pretty quickly but it was up to Kate to find the evidence.

4 stars for an engaging novella by Linda Castillo. In this book a power outage coincides with an Amish "rager" where a hundred or Amish teens(many underage) gather for drinking and partying. Kate Burkholder, Painters Mill Police Chief arrives at the scene and finds that a teenage girl has been assaulted and is unconscious. Kate does solve the case, with help from her small department and he significant other, John Tomasetti, investigator for the Ohio BCI(Bureau of Criminal Investigation).
One quote: "It's dark in Painters Mill, Ohio. The freshly plowed fields are as rich and black as dark chocolate. "
I read this library book in 1 day.

Kate Burkholder deals with a power outage and a rage of Amish partying teenagers at which a woman is assaulted and beaten into a coma. It all came down to shoes and footprints.

Short story with our favorite Chief of Police, Kate Burkholder. The story has all the elements of her longer novels so it was interesting. I rated it down one star, though, because even in its brevity, the perpetrator and motive was so easy to predict early on.

I don't usually read short stories but I love this series way too much to miss anything that happens in it.

Just a fair novella in the Kate Burkholder series. This is one series that I do read all the novellas in as they have some story to them.

This was definitely a short story, it actually felt a bit too short. The story got to the point and was wrapped up quickly. It is still worth reading but it's a quickie ;)
