Humorous, but also thought-provoking and a fun plot. Loved the characters.
Lovely, dark and while not my favorite Chuck (I think that's either Nickelby or Dombey) some mighty fine work. Odd that no matter the action greed makes a more plausible motive than anything else.

This was really a great story bubbling over with terrific characters. I adored Jenny Wren and her last scene with Sloppy was a beautiful masterstroke. Dickens handled the themes of duplicity and masquerade with skill.
I would have given it 5 stars, and briefly I did!, but the overarching charade of the book, revealed close to the end, soured the experience for me. It was 1) hard to believe people would go to such lengths in such a cause and 2) detracted from a conclusion/plot the reader had already bought and found necessary and good. I wasn't convinced. Or rather, I was convinced --it certainly worked-- but it had the effect of cheapening the plot and dynamic.
Oh well, still eminently worth reading. Some fabulous characters, love affairs and scenes.

Read Summer 1989. Audio Fall 2010; again, Summer 2012. Read Fall 2020. You know, I bet I read it in the 90s, too. It's awfully fun.

Wacky, moving, and generally delightful! This novel has sold me on Dickens.
Similarly to The Mill on the Floss, this novel makes bitter that I cannot go find a Dickens fandom on the Internet. English class is good and all, but there's much less in the way of squeeing. I guess I will simply have to force everyone I know to read it....
