Upon hearing ‘Apollo 11’, the brain immediately jumps to Neil Armstrong’s first words on the moon. Michael Collins’ autobiography shares his perspective of that mission from lunar orbit as well as his journey as a pilot and NASA. It serves as a good reminder just how much risk was taken to put men on the moon and how many people were behind the scenes making this possible. With extremely detailed accounts of procedures and machines, there’s never a dull moment.

If it was not for the evident sexism, I would easily give it 4 stars. I know, I know... it was written in the 70’s, but still... Apart from that, I absolutely loved the (extremely!) detailed information about his career and missions with NASA. Great read for those into astronomy.

If someone wanted to read one book about the space race to fall in love with it, I would recommend this one.

My second reading. My favorite astronaut.

I thought this book was a bit too technical for the average reader. Some parts were pretty boring and Collins tended to drone on in some places. I found the chapters when he was in flight to be most interesting. Some people said they didn't think the last chapter was necessary but I actually enjoyed the insights he shared at the end.

I did find Collins to have a bit of a male-chauvinistic tone. He does have a deprecating sense of humor, but as a female reader, some of his comments didn't sit right with me.

What a great book. It's long, but it goes pretty fast. A fascinating look into the history of the space program and the Apollo 11 moon landing as told by Mike Collins, the third astronaut in the Apollo 11 crew. Loved this book. Very informative, often funny, and quite personal. Collins' description of his space flights and spacewalks are thrilling. I would definitely read it again.
