I lost patience near the end because it was too recursive. It also doesn’t make sense why Helena never figured out how to stop the false memories even after a 100 years, despite the fact that she herself figured it out in the original time-line.
That said, it was a highly engaging read, and I was completely immersed in the mystery. The conception oftime travel through memory recollection (although memory doesn’t quite work that way) was complex and fascinating. The longing to somehow change the past we regret is very human (heck, I was yearning to change certain parts of my own past). But how are we going to deal with the new consequences?
Also, this really resonated with me:
“The thought comes almost like a prayer—I don’t want to look back anymore. I’m ready to accept that my existence will sometimes contain pain. No more trying to escape, either through nostalgia or a memory chair. They’re both the same fucking thing.
Life with a cheat code isn’t life. Our existence isn’t something to be engineered or optimized for the avoidance of pain.
That’s what it is to be human—the beauty and the pain, each meaningless without the other.”

it had my full attention and not a lot of books do. black crouch is definitely my favorite author that’s been new to me this year. but beware it is trippy and mind-boggling and asks the existential questions

This book was right up my alley. I loved the premise and enjoyed the dual protagonists with the book flipping back and forth between them. I appreciate how the author used logic and time travel to tell the story while weaving in memories and feelings, and even a love story. Definitely recommend and I look forward to this being made into a TV series!
