Really lovely coming of age story/romance, heavy on the coming of age aspects. A sympathetic heroine + a supportive love interest + summer romance = great read.
I am a complete mess after finishing this book - who's surprised?
This was everything. This story made me feel again and made me hope and dream. Claude and Miah showed me that you need to let yourself feels things for the pain to go away. Their story showed me that even though it's hard and painful to see the most beautiful things come to an end, they have to, and they make us who we are by being part of our past. That way, they don't ever really go away.
This novel was beautifully written, I loved the evolution of the characters. I found Claude's character particularly relatable thanks to the realistic depiction of this moment between teenager and adult, this moment where we leave high school and we're trying to redefine ourselves. I related to her struggles, her hopes, her anxiety about the future and even the present. Miah is one of those characters that charm us and that we can't let go of. I loved their dynamic and their romance, which was so genuine.
Jennifer Niven once again tackled themes like first times, divorce, grief with honesty and openness and realism that is rare in YA . It felt real and relatable and I felt so touched by that.
I'll never forget the story of Claude and Miah, what the island gave to her and what they brought to each other. I'll always hold them in my heart.
I needed this. I needed this book.
Thank you, Jennifer, for writing another story that resonated so deeply within me.

A coming of age novel featuring Claudine who is just days away from graduation. Counting down the days until school finishes and summer begins before heading off to college. Chatting to her friends about plans for the summer, boys and virginity. ⠀
⠀
Her plans go out of the window as her parents announce that they are separating. Forcing her to keep quiet about it for the time being, walking through her final days at high school feeling as the floor has been taken from beneath her. Instead of the carefree summer she had planned with her best friend, she is now spending it with her mom on a remote island whilst her mom researches her family history. ⠀
⠀
She doesn't want to be there, she doesn't want to hear from her dad and she's fallen out with her best friend (who is too loved up to pay attention to her). Then she meets Miah on the island who despite a rocky start shows her the beauty of the island as well as opening her eyes to the world.

“Life is an accumulation of aches. They fill you up and take your breath away and you think you’ll never breathe again, but before you know it, you are just words on paper, gone quiet and asleep until someone finds those words and reads them.”
i had very high hopes for this book; the first 100 pages are slow as hell; nothing about the actions of the characters makes sense, quite always what the teenagers characters do is stereotypical and is nothing like an actual teenager would.
also the characters are unlikable: claude and saz are two egoistic and narcissist people who can somehow only think about sex and virginity and stuff like that. i can guarantee you that no 18yo is *that* obsessed about virginity and thinks about sex 24/7; also the relationship between claude and jeremiah is SO rushed, like *unrealistically* rushed.
nothing actually happened in the whole 380ish pages, the only thing i liked is the recurring shark teeth thing, that’s all :(

c'était sympa a lire mais pas transcendant, surtout vu qui l'a écrit
A magical coming-of-age story with a sprinkle of teenage angst and a big dose of young love. Very sweet. I loved the setting!
There were parts of this book that I loved... and parts that just dragged. Claude just graduated high school and is navigating her parents divorce, her best friend getting involved with someone else and the beginning of physical relationships...
Then she and her mom are forced to go to an island off Georgia for the summer. Claude is not happy about this and pouts for awhile. Then she meets Jeremiah ("Miah"). They form a relationship quickly even though they both know there is an expiration date on the relationship. Both characters are flawed and both are young. This is definitely a YA book, and I think I would have enjoyed it more reading it when I was in my late teens. I don't usually feel that way about YA, but I did with this one.
