I did learn a lot from this book about statisticians and the history of probability. But the stories were too dense and dry for something of this length to really hook me.

Turns into descriptive papers on various topics, without much keeping the chapters together or deriving lessons/conclusions from the story. I would struggle for YEARS to get past page 100 or so -- I think because I got tired of reading a series of case studies about historical personas. I wanted something with more linear continuity.

If you're curious of the earliest timeline of risk and how chance, probability, insurance and markets have evolved, this is a great book. For all else, it may fall on deaf ears.

OK but not great. I didn't realize it was published in the 90s until I got to the end and some of his conclusions were a bit silly in the context of the financial issues of the past 20 years.

A journey into the minds of people who undertook the task to understand and define risk. Seldom does a narrative get put together to link the influence of gambling methods on investments, but the story gets a home in this book. Well written!

Was a fluff piece of a history book about risk. Not what I was advertised for.
