Beverly Jenkins loves her feisty FMCs and I am here for it. I liked the take of Rhine passing, and then having to cross back over for love, but especially compared to her other books I read recently, this is much more of a romantic subplot than a romance novel (I still really liked it!) I also love her commitment to a 3rd act crisis over a 3rd act breakup.

Who knew a Jenkins character study could burn this slowly and this brightly? I loved the deep exploration of identity through Rhine, and Eddy is a wonderful female main character. Rhine’s choice to pass as white and the repercussions of that choice and later ones cut deeply throughout this book. As with most Jenkins we also get some detailed history lessons all in the setting of an old west town. The audio narration by Kim Staunton is absolutely worth a listen as well!
