There’s a new horror movie about terrible things happening to a family—told from their dog’s perspective.
And since most headlines put “dog” and “heartbreaking” in the same sentence… people are like: nope.

Mild spoilers

Anyway—The Farseer Trilogy is an amazing coming-of-age story about a relatable, if sometimes a bit dense, character who always pulls the short end of the stick—plus a wolf with an incredible sense of humor. Written by the absolute queen of high fantasy, Robin Hobb.

The world-building is gradual and beautifully done.
The characters are unique, with depth and well written (even the non-human ones).
The magic system is relatively simple.

And yes, it’s only the first trilogy in a much bigger universe, but the ending is as satisfying as possible—considering how Hobb loves to torture her POV character—and the story feels well-rounded.

Anyway, these books with dogs in them are amazing and will break your heart.

Must read.

5/5 for all three.

This book was a struggle to get through! The plot involved a lot of travelling, which I found boring, and many of the characters that I liked in the previous books barely made an appearance. Fitz made so many stupid decisions, but I'm willing to forgive him since he was going through a lot. At least the character development was good, and I loved the relationships between Nighteyes, Fitz, and the Fool! Despite my mixed feelings for this book, I still really enjoyed the series!

While there were many things I enjoyed about this book, I think the thing I felt most was frustrated.  There was so much that felt like willful ignorance because things were explained well enough that I as the reader picked up on the meaning but that Fitz as the character did not and perhaps could not because they way they tried to explain things to him was not in one he could easily grasp and understand.
