This is a difficult book to rate. If I were to just go on the story itself, I’d have to rate it a high “2” to low “3”. The same storylines from a lesser author would have made this a chore to read.

I didn’t particularly like many of the characters and I never felt like I really got to know Katey. Sure, we learn a lot about her drinking and partying habits, her friends, and a bit about her work…but I don’t feel like I ever got to know her as a person and her hopes and dreams. Also, the book begins with her and her husband in middle age but we barely get to know him at all. We learn an awful lot about many lesser people in her life but not him. There’s even a slight tease when she first meets him but it turns out to be just a glancing interaction. We never do learn anything about them as a couple. Unless I missed it, we don’t even know if they had children. I realize the book is more about the friends and suitors she had in her early adulthood that shaped her life but I doubt her character would have selected a husband that wasn’t interesting or had an impact on her life as well.

I’m very generously giving the 4 stars because I’m always amazed at the writing of Amor Towles. He has such a gift for language.

The length of time it took me to read this book bears no relation to how good it is. It was a false start.
I absolutely loved this book. I was transported back to 1930s New York where I had such a great time and such a heartbreaking time and now I don’t quite know what to do with my time. Seek out another book by Mr Towles seems like the best plan.

3.5 rounded up
I went in waves with this book. I loved the original trio with Katey, Eve and Tinker, but as the story morphed to focus solely on Katey I found myself losing interest at times. However, Towles tied it back together in the end. And I LOVE a full circle moment. It made me reflect on the idea of missing people, which I think never truly goes away.
