You would never guess that this is the author’s first novel. Witty dialogue and perfectly imperfect characters set in 1930s manhattan teeter back and forth between luxury and poverty, mundane life and the freedom that comes with the infinite possibilities of youth. The plot is there, but the characters’ development drive the novel more than anything else.

I enjoy Amor Towles’ books and his style. This was an intriguing story set in the late 30s with some interesting characters. I liked the perspective of Katey and her development throughout.

I loved this book! The setting is interesting, the style is readable and the story is positive yet neither saccharin nor predictable. I love that the love story is one of "might have been," yet the characters end up happy.
