the book is a wannabe that wishes it could be like hemingway, tolstoy and a bit of Fitzgerald. Newsflash: it doesn’t even come close.

The people in this book would be my worst nightmare for company. A lot of words that say a whole lot of nothing.

This book has been sitting on my shelf for YEARS and I finally got around to reading it this month. With descriptive writing and imagery, I was instantly transported to 1930s NYC. The story itself was sort of "no plot, just vibes" which is exactly the kind of story I enjoy.

Delicious prose, would highly recommend if you like a NYC setting.

One of my favorite books. I loved A Gentleman in Moscow, so I wanted to read this one. It was so different from GIM but the writing is just as gorgeous. I love books that talk about books. And I love smart, independent female characters.

"On the steps of the Plaza stood the hotel's officious captains dressed in long red coats with big brass buttons. Half a block away, the epaulettes officers of the Essex House word a sharply contrasting shade of blue. This would no doubt make things so much easier should the two hotels ever go to war."

After reading A Gentleman in Moscow first this book was a disappointment. Beautiful writing as one would expect from Towles but the characters simply fell flat after the first quarter of the book (which was 5 stars).

Oh, I loved this book so much. Smart and funny characters with interesting background stories. Story moved along at a steady pace, and while it addresses class and authenticity, doesn’t bog down in over-serious critique. A welcome diversion from current events.
