I liked the setting of this book and appreciated the descriptions of New York during the time period. However, I thought the book was lacking in character development and I was back and forth between wanting to keep reading and not really being engaged. Much of the vocabulary and style of writing didn't fit the time period, and this created a discrepancy that made the story lose some authenticity.

Kudos to the author for taking a simple storyline and turning it into an exceptional novel. 3.5 Stars for letting me escape to another era.

This is a much lighter read than A Gentleman in Moscow (which I had read first and then made my way to this book) but I was equally wowed by his writing and prose and found myself lost and transported into this different time period thoroughly enjoying this escapist read. It's not really plot driven as much as you're along for a year in the life of Katey...

This book was the November selection for my book club, and I really loved it! The characters were so well fleshed out, and there were layers to each of them. There were a lot of characters, yet all of them were invaluable to the story.

There were many little tidbits that I felt showed brilliant insight into the human condition.

My final word: I loved this book! The characters were so full and rich, that I mentioned at our book club that I could read additional books based on each of the other characters. Brilliant, sweeping, intriguing, fast moving. This is one grand tale!
