This book will forever be a favorite with me! I'm so glad I came back to it again after reading it numerous times in my childhood. Now I will be sharing it with my daughter.

Oddly enough, this middle grade book from 1916 was a really interesting read within the context of the proliferation and growing reliance of some on ChatGPT today

This was a free Kindle book, and it had some good reviews, so I thought I would try it. One word: quaint! It is a little old-fashioned, but then, it was first published in 1916 (or 1917, depending on the source of the information). It was written for a younger audience (like, 8-11 year olds probably), but I still found it to be enjoyable. Besty, also known as Elizabeth Ann, was orphaned as an infant, and spent most of her life with her more well-to-do aunt and great-aunt in the city. They had servants, and Betsy was catered to in every way. Then, the great-aunt falls ill, and Betsy is sent to live (eventually) with her 'cousins' in the country. There, of course, Betsy has to learn to do even the most basic things, but she discovers her own strength when she finds all the things she is capable of. Here are my two favorite quotes from the book: " 'Sometimes it seems to me that every time a new piece of machinery comes into the door some of our wits fly out the window!'" And, "There was, of course, no reason on earth why they should giggle, which is, of course, the very reason why they did. If you've ever been a little girl you know about this."

The sweetest book! I'm immediately adding this to my favorite cozy reads list because I loved it so much. I wasn't familiar with the story and I decided not to read too much about it before reading. I'm really glad I did that - I enjoyed it all the more and I was happily surprised at the premise. I loved the uplifting, positive message of the story and how everyone is looked at with understanding and compassion. Everything about this story is cozy: the little girl Betsy, her move to Vermont, her new family and the home itself. I can't decide whether I loved Betsy, her family or the house more! All of it was lovely from start to finish. I wanted to savor every moment while reading. It's one of those books that you hold, hug and stare at with adoration when you finish it. I can't believe I'd never heard of this book until now and I regret all the years it was unknown to me. Love, love, love! I can't rate this book highly enough.

A great read on a child learning she is capable and able after being sheltered. It’s an empowering read for children to realize the pride that comes from taking ownership of their abilities.

This may be my absolute favorite read-aloud of all time (perhaps excepting the Narnia series). It's intelligent, and does NOT talk down to its audience. The vocabulary is excellent. And most importantly, the emotional intelligence of this story is what makes it so extraordinary. Somehow, this "mundane" story of life in "the old days" is enchanting, captivating, and enriching. While my 10 and 8 years olds thoroughly enjoyed it, my 12 and 5 year olds also found excuses to listen it nearly every day.
