Reminiscent of Anne of Green Gables, The Wise Woman, and Little House on the Prairie...a delight!

A friend recommended this as a read aloud for my 13 year old and I’m so glad she did! This is a wonderful classic that we easily could’ve missed. Betsy’s growth in grit and stature is one for the ages. We both loved it. Five big stars from both of us!
adventurous emotional funny informative lighthearted medium-paced

Read aloud to my 8 year old daughter and 10 year old son. We all loved it, even my son! The story follows spoiled, coddled Betsy as she leaves the (over) protective shirts of Aunt Francis to stay with the Putney relations on a farm in Vermont. Betsy finds her own two feet in this delightful story. The narrator talks directly to the reader, which makes for a fantastic read aloud. I can’t recommend this book enough. It has become one of my favorite classic children’s books. This will be one that I will reread. It’s a book friend.

Such a sweet, lighthearted, family-oriented classic children’s book! In a similar vein to the Little House books.

AO Year 2
Such a sweet little book.

This is a book I read & loved as a child. I recently reread it to see if it held up to my childhood expectations (always a dangerous proposition). Luckily, I still loved the book as much as I did as a child. I love how Betsy was allowed to grow up and be independent. My childhood was just the opposite of her childhood while loved I was definitely not coddled.

I don't remember exactly when I read this or if I ever finished it, but I know I had it hanging around for ages, and I have some distinct memories of certain passages. I think I need to hunt it down and read it for nostalgia' sake.

Quick, easy read. A personal classic. Betsy’s growth and change was a pleasure to experience. It’s a happy story that I will soon share with my kids. I didn’t see how it would turn out happy and started to dread the ending, but it turned out oh so well and was so beautiful! Our family will read this again and again I’m sure!
