A favorite in our home. Definitely a keeper for our shelves.
I just love this lovely book full of love and lovely people, written in a delightful manner, with delightful insights. One insight it gave me when I first read it was that our homeschooling adventure was going to turn out just fine.
I believe this has been the oldest book we've read as a bedtime story with the kids, but it didn't feel like it too much: it has aged fairly well, even if we're fairly removed from the technology they talk about. I felt at the beginning like it was somewhat preachy, but by the end it actually felt like it worked well, even the parts I thought were a little much. It's somewhat of a self-discovery, coming-of-age story, in a good, healthy, moral way. The kids loved it, too.
An extremely charming book, one I adored as a child. Elizabeth Ann lives in a city with Great-Aunt Henrietta and Aunt Frances. Aunt Frances shelters, protects and understands Elizabeth Ann almost out of existence, until Great-Aunt Henrietta gets sick and has to go off on a rest cure with Aunt Frances to look after her. Timid, genteel Elizabeth Ann is sent to Vermont to the dreaded Putney cousins, Aunt Abigail, Uncle Henry, and Cousin Ann, who live on a farm. At first, everything is wrong: the cousins call her Betsy, they have terrifying dogs and expect Elizabeth Ann to cook and do chores-- why, she even has to get up and get dressed on her own! Naturally, all this is incredibly good for Betsy, and she becomes a stronger, braver, and much happier girl.
Read this to Peter for homeschool. So good! One of the best children's books I've ever read. Agest 8 and up would enjoy it. Or even younger if read aloud.
"Understood Betsy" is a sweet and endearing read. It is slightly reminiscent of "Emily of New Moon," but not as sophisticated or widesweeping. Geared toward younger children (grades 1 to 3).

Such a sweet story!! My 6 & 8 year olds loved it as well as myself.
Just an absolute joy to read and a reminder of just how capable children can be when they do not have everything done for them! Also love reading about simpler times
