It’s a more angsty take on the Batman universe, and Batman is already pretty angsty. I did really like the focus on Bruce’s love of Gotham as well as his love for his kids and family

Great art. Very cool and deep characters. The main theme is personal identity and choice. It's about defying your darkest choices to stay who you are or giving into the corruption.

Very interesting take on how Bruce Wayne could have impacted Gotham had he not become the Bat. The most impactful line was that the Batman we follow is called, by the others "The Nightmare Bat".

This is for everyone who wanted to see what the unholy fusion of Batman & the Joker would be like and what kinda nefarious plan he would have for Gotham.
Essentially he would hire a not!Punisher Batman for even deadlier force & tactics and poison the city's water supply with a Hate Plague.
...
Huh, go figure...

What makes the tension slightly ramp up is the ticking time bomb of OUR Batman slowly turning into a Jokerized version of himself, since multiverse shenanigans had the aforementioned unholy fusion come through from a previous massive crossover event & OUR Joker found out a way to transfer his condition like a werewolf or vampire upon his own death. So what with the Dark Knight Detective not operating at 100%, he has to find help from someone who knows how the Joker thinks. With our prime psychopath down, he has to find help from the next best one, James Gordon Jr, who's a little better since the last time we saw him and now he's a high-functioning psychopath!

Stylistically, it's great. Very dark, twisted, and the text bubbles do an unnerving thing where certain letters or words become Halloween font red&dripping whenever Bats is losing it.
Storywise, it gets a little messy and the main problem again is that despite all the various kinds of help that COULD be found in the wide wide DC universe, they keep it contained as if Gotham was the only place in the world with anything spectacular happening. (Don't tell me Lex Luthor couldn't have cured the Jokerization in a heartbeat!)
Thematically, it takes the central ideological conflict from Nolan's The Dark Knight and replicates it with a fresh coat of paint & other Hot Topic flair. It gets very tiresome to keep on hearing "humanity bad; we're all just animals that'll tear each other apart; this serum will let us all live our Mr. Hyde existences as nature intended!" blahblahblah. The other wrinkle is the idea that in the vast multiverse, OUR Batman is the most miserable since other variants have all found ways to hang up the vigilante life and make better change to the city without sinking millions into a Bat-bullet-train and thus, they are happier. Even though no verbal argument is brought up on how this might be true or false, those of us who have consumed enough Batman media know that sometimes, it's not a matter of his own happiness as much as what NEEDS to be done. And boy-howdy, do a lot of bad people need a knuckle sandwich served by a billionaire with issues and ninja training.

Did I know or understand what was going on with the story a majority of the time? Absolutely not. Did it look cool and creepy? Yes! So, you know, enjoyable but not incredible.
