Read this while hanging out in the Dallas Holocaust Museum gift shop waiting to enter the exhibition.

I said I was going to leave at least a sentence-long review for every book I log this year, but I don’t think I’m qualified to say whether a YA novel is good anymore.

A little slow and then really, really fast. There was a lot of time spent in the ghetto, sneaking out getting food, that I think could've been cut down. I really enjoyed the narration, though, and the point of view. There wasn't a ton of character growth, though, despite the main character's myriad of experiences.

This is probably my fifth read through of the book (I teach it every year) and it really gets me every time. One of my favorite books.

I wish I liked this book more than I did. I can't really name an age range for it, as I think the subject material may not be appropriate for elementary aged children; yet, the book seems too simple for teens. I also was distracted sometimes by the inconsistencies. (How could a boy get to the age he is without knowing what his name is or what the word "happy" means, for example.) Still, Spinelli is always a fine storyteller.
