i'm so glad i finally read this. tolkien truly was a master wordsmith and worldbuilder. this has so much depth and heart and really gives the sense of seeing a snapshot of a far, far larger world with its own complex history and lore. the inspiration drawn from his own wartime experiences is palpable in the ringbearers' chapters: the inexpressible homosocial bond and love of brothers-in-arms, the trenches and the exhaustion and the filth and the horror of the ever-present but oft-hidden enemy, the unhealing wounds to the body and the psyche.
i never cared much for the movies, but i think i'll be able to appreciate them better now.

Then and now, forevermore, the best fictional story ever per to paper. All emotions wrapped up in this story are so beautiful and overwhelming that it’s almost unbearable to speak about without tearing up.
Written by a man trying to cope with the trauma of a war, and losing innocence. A man that was so driven by his faith and philosophies which he was able to channel via his education to create a world for his own enjoyment. I feel lucky that he was willing to write a story which takes place at the end of that world’s history, which he wrote just because he hoped people would enjoy it. And I enjoyed it very much.
Read it. This book has so much soul and love in it that it bleeds off of the page. It is a privilege to read such a story. Thank you, Professor Tolkien. Thank you.

What a book! This took quite a while for me to read, given that the whole thing is over 1100 pages long, but I can say that I thoroughly enjoyed it! Even though the parts with Frodo and Sam seemed very dull and boring most of the time, probably to reflect their misery. But definitely a fantastic read! And it has not aged as badly as I thought it would.
