A great literary work, without a doubt. Just wasn't my type of story.

This reread has been utterly delightful. The sheer scope and richness of this world never fails to amaze me. Legolas and Gimli galavanting on a shared horse, Pippin the jestering fool, Sam and Frodo, Gollum and his fishes, Faramir my beloved, Eowyn ruining the Witch King, Gandalf and his epic transition, TREEBEARD, Sam and Shelob (!!). These will always be iconic to me!! Also the emphasis on oral history, storytelling, and the validity of old wives tales was an interesting through line to explore! There is an immense amount of heart at the centre of these books, and getting to sit with the characters through their journey is so rewarding. I just love how so much magic or notable goodwill appears as an appreciation for the simple pleasures in life, and nature. A good bath and meal are held in higher regard than any overwhelming display of power. Seriously, had a lump in my throat during the final chapter, and almost cried on the bus when Sam and Frodo wake up after being saved.
Wonderful to read this again after several years. I think I appreciate it much more this time than ever before. Read all the appendices as well; the care that went into this book is amazing.
