What can I say that hasn't been said? It's a classic, though not without it's issues.

This is my 2nd reading or 3rd. Third.

I love this book, though I probably love “the Hobbit” a bit more.

There are thing’s I notice now that I haven’t noticed before, or, probably did but not as much. There is a lot of ideas of caste, place in society, stereotyping of different peoples ... much harder to ignore in today’s culture and the more I diversify my own reading.

I still love this book. The plot, world building and character development are worthy to be emulated. The ideas of caste, good= white and bad= dark, not so much.

Happy I finally read this trilogy, because I enjoyed it more than I expected to. I anticipated the writing would be dry and/or too outdated, but I seem to have forgotten that at its heart, this is just one epic adventure story. And I love adventure stories!

If you don't like reading about long journeys (with every detail packed in), then you probably won't like this book. There is not much action and not a lot of thrill, but there is a ton of warm fuzzy friendship between the characters and you really do feel for them as their good natures are tested constantly by the hardships they encounter on their quest to destroy the ring.

I especially liked Gollum and Frodo and Sam's story (and Pippin!!!), and only wish it was told interspersed with the others' in books two and three rather than on their own separately. I am also so happy I saw (most of) the movies after reading because I could really imagine their surroundings! Tolkien is great at describing his world and it was a pleasure to be immersed in it.

My only issue is (naturally) the lack of women characters almost entirely, but I knew and was prepared for that going in so it pissed me off less than it otherwise would have.

All in all, a great and immersive world!
