Masterpiece

These books are so. amazing. Yes, they're long. Yes, they can take a little while to get into. (yestheyaresometimesboring.) But all in all, the plot is enthralling and intense, the characters are deep and lovable or despicable as their character determines. Tolkien did an excellent job of putting in Christian themes without making it an outright allegory like Narnia.
I'll admit, there were a few parts that I might have skimmed over...I've never been one for long descriptions :P but the rest of it is just so darn good, there's no question about five stars.

This is so frigging slow. I only managed to work my way through it by listening to the audio book (narrated by Andy Serkis) at the same time. And it still took me months to do it.
Sorry, not my cup of tea.

But: Kudos to Andy Serkis who is doing an incredible job. Chef's kiss!

I mean, LOTR is a classic and such a great story. It’s one of my absolute favorites and I don’t have a tattoo of the One Ring’s inscription for nothing. Yes, the ending is long-winded but seriously, who really does want to stop reading LOTR when, after more than 1,000 pages, you become so heavily invested in all of the characters?

And yes, the movies are great but there is so much more insight that the book provides that the movies don’t.
