Had to study this for a Uni course, and to be honest it was quite interesting. I loved the concept of Blake blurring the binaries of good vs evil, reason vs imagination (i cannot believe imagination was seen as evil/associated with the devil back then).

I also have a deep appreciation for the creation of the work, and the intense time and labour Blake and his wife endured to print words and pictures IN COLOUR, on the plates, after learning about his life in my lecture.

My favourite part was most definitely the Proverbs from Hell, probably because it was the easiest to understand, and each line was singular, so you didn't need to understand everything to get something out of it. I did have some difficulty reading the book however, as I didn't understand a lot of the pages that were describing and interpreting the illustrations. But the actual text itself is stunning, and although it's not something I would pick up on my own, I definitely ejnoyed studying it.
It gave me and a lot of my group members lots of new ideas for our creative project on form and formlessness, which is so great!

Superb! Sets out Blake's spiritual ideas in opposition to the standard theology of the day. Much satire here too, so it is easy to see how much has passed over so many. The illustrations as well - i can't get over how a few little squiggly lines can be so expressive and descriptive, but I guess that is the mark of a true artist.
Energy is eternal delight. :)

I just wanted to give a standing ovation every time one of the demons talked.

“Did He not mock at the Sabbath, and so mock the Sabbath’s God? murder those who were murdered because of Him? turn away the law from the woman taken in adultery, steal the labour of others to support Him? bear false witness when He omitted making a defence before Pilate? covet when He prayed for His disciples, and when He bid them shake off the dust of their feet against such as refused to lodge them? I tell you, no virtue can exist without breaking these ten commandments. Jesus was all virtue, and acted from impulse, not from rules.” (satan, on god)

Satan slayed this!

"The ancient poets animated all sensible objects with Gods or Geniuses, calling them by the names and adorning them with properties of woods, rivers, mountains, lakes, cities, nations, and whatever their enlarged and numerous senses could perceive. And particularly they studied the Genius of each city and country, placing it under its mental deity. Till a system was formed, which some took advantage of and enslaved the vulgar by attempting to realize or abstract the mental deities from their objects. Thus began Priesthood. Choosing forms of worship from poetic tales. And at length they pronounced that the Gods had ordered such things. Thus men forgot that all deities reside in the human breast."

some things were a bit hard to understand but that’s expected w something written 300 years ago. besides that, very enjoyable and a great satire of religion. i especially enjoyed blake’s beef w swedenborg. even hundreds of years later the criticisms he makes on christianity are still very relevant. thought provoking but still light and can be read in less than an hour
