I rented this book through Kindle Unlimited because I wanted a shorter read and this one didn't disappoint in that sense. 32 pages isn't too bad, right?

––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

This book chronicles our unnamed narrator's suspicions of her mother's use of witchcraft. It goes through decades of her life with her mother and the twists and turns that relationship takes. It ends with her mother's death at the end while the narrator expounds on how she feels about her life with her mother.

––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

I don't know what I was expecting but I was bored for a bit there. I think I was expecting some sort of big showdown or something, which didn't happen. I mean, the book is only 32 pages so what else would I have expected with something so short? I should have known better. lol

I'm not sure I'd recommend this book since the mother has undiagnosed mental issues that the narrator could see from a mile away. I wish we could have seen her mother receive some help for it before her death but I'm disappointed that we didn't see it. I'm sorry this review is so short but yeah.

““You were such a sensitive child. So easily wounded. So I told you those things. I didn’t want you to feel defenseless in the face of life. Life can be harsh. I wanted you to feel protected, and to know that there was a greater power watching over you. That the Universe was taking a personal interest.”

I kissed her forehead, a skull with a very thin covering of skin. The protector was her, the greater power was her, the Universe that took an interest was her as well; always her.

“I love you,” I said. “I know, my treasure. And did you feel protected?” “Yes,” I said. “I did.” This was somewhat true. “It was very sweet of you to invent all that for me.” She looked at me sideways out of her green eyes. “Invent?” she said.”

fast-paced

endings are arbitrary, as the author points out, but this one was pretty sweet. didn’t realize this was a short story when I requested it in a book exchange and wound up ristening to it. would recommend!
