If anyone didn't like Dido Twite before, they certainly would after reading this! When she talked back to Aunt Tribulation, I wanted to cheer! This is a book I would have LOVED when I was younger. There were some parts that required a bit of suspension of disbelief, but in a good way. There were bits that made me think of [b:Moby-Dick|153747|Moby-Dick|Herman Melville|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1309376917s/153747.jpg|2409320], but in a good way - the whale here is pink! There were also bits that reminded me of [b:The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle|325416|The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle (Books of Wonder)|Hugh Lofting|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1173762814s/325416.jpg|518536], which also has a whale. Overall, I enjoyed this very much. Now I'm off to start [b:The Stolen Lake|36635|The Stolen Lake|Joan Aiken|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1168734546s/36635.jpg|2353422] since it is due at the library right away!

I loved these books so much. Not sure why it took me all my life to find this series. Fantastic fun.

I'm happy I got to read more about Dido, as she is my favorite heroine of all times! I love her plucky attitude, and her "brattiness" that was seen in the previous novel is all but gone! I will admit that I didn't enjoy this story as much as I had hoped; it felt a bit too disjointed for me. While I'm used to reading about ridiculous and funny characters in this series, Captain Casket was a bit too ridiculous, and I found his obsession with the pink whale to be perplexing. If I'm honest, I didn't really get the point of the pink whale for most of the story, and when the author DID tie it all in, I still felt as if it was a bit lackluster. I know this may sound hypocritical coming from me, especially since what I love about Joan Aiken and this series is the complete weirdness of it all, but in the case of this novel, it just didn't work for me. However, the overall story was funny and interesting with more Hanoverian plots thrown in! I am going to continue to read the next book in the series and see what else Dido is going to do!

The first Aiken I ever read. Interestingly, it’s one of the few novels in the series which I feel can really stand on its own–the complicated backstory of Dido and Simon and all the rest doesn’t come into it except very marginally. [Mar. 2010]

Good read. I am looking for the rest of the Willoughby Chase sequence.
