Some hefty stuff here, but it's handled with sensitivity, and some really funny moments too--I absolutely *cackled* at Simon's mom's commentary when the squirrel storyline was introduced.

A funny, funny book that uses its light touch to portray the struggles of a kid who’s the lone survivor of a school shooting. Of course, his biggest struggle is to escape that label, to be known as someone beyond his trauma, and the book does a fine job in giving us only short glimpses before finally revealing the full back story. The cast of secondary characters is terrific—animal and human. Entertaining and thought-provoking.

Trigger warning: Simon is a survivor of a school shooting. This is slowly revealed through the first half of the book. We read of the shooting details in small bits as Simon deals with his PTSD and making new friends who initially do not know of his past experience.
