I’ve never heard of this sub genre of mystery books called cozy mysteries until I ended up in the cozy mystery section in my Barnes and noble a couple days ago. I looked up what they were and it seems like something I would be interested in. The first novel I picked up was this one and I was super excited for it. A story about two best friends owning a book shop/ coffee shop together and then all of a sudden someone dies! It was very light hearted, fast paced and overall I enjoyed it! The only issue I had was the main character Krissy was a little bit too pushy.

Book #32 Read in 2017
Death by Coffee by Alex Erickson

This is the first in a cozy mystery series, set in a coffee shop/bookstore. Two friends open up the coffee shop/bookstore and a customer ends up dying for a peanut allergy shortly after his purchase, even though the coffee did not have nuts in it. Shop owner Krissy decides to begin her own investigation. Of course, she gets herself into some hot water along the way. This was a good, quick read and I will continue reading the series.

This book was absolutely not for me. I did not enjoy it.

I found the main character, our sleuth character, entirely annoying. She just isn't my cup of tea - pun unintended. I didn't relate to her, and I just really didn't find her likeable at all.

The mystery itself was fairly interesting, but I'm just really not into this setting, this town, or our sleuth character. This is a series I will definitely be skipping.

Couldn't. Just... No. MC wasn't cute, endearing or even nice. She has a cat, yay?

Nosy and rude and snotty, Krissy Hancock served coffee to man who later died across the street from her newly opened cafe/bookstore. As someone new to the town and literally knowing no one, this would be the golden opportunity to meet new friends right? Except, for an amateur sleuth she has no tact and no business asking anyone anything. At least figure out a nice way to get your questions into a conversation!

I don't have cats but I like them well enough. But when there's a longer paragraph about the cat's refusal or inability to use the litter box than an explanation of why the main character talks so cruelly to people trying to be friendly, I'm sorry, but I lost patience. I tried to keep going because it was a free book but I couldn't. 37% DNF, didn't even care whodunit.

Terrible writing & pick-me “I’m not as pretty as my bff” energy from the FMC.
