It was trash. Written by a man who doesn't know women or cats and doesn't like either of them.

Amusing and fun read. Krissy is the daughter of a famous author and her best friend Vicki is being pressured to be an actress by her acting parents. To get a chance to be themselves, Vicki goes to a small town and gets Kris’s to come start a bookstore/coffee shop with her. The first day the store is open, a businessman from across the street comes in to get a cup of coffee, returns to his office and dies. Krissy about swoons over the hunky policeman who comes to ask about the coffee and it turns out he likes her. krissy does have an annoying habit of shutting everyone and everything out when she gets to thinking about something.
She and Vicki both have unruly cats, although Vicki’s is the store mascot since he is less evil minded than Krissy’s. Although Trouble does manage to live up to his name. Krissy’s vengeful cat is Misfit and she is convinced he’s out to get her.
Krissy has apparently always gone for solving mysteries, even with a maximum amount of embarrassment and she won’t stop now.

Easy read for a rainy day with a good cup of coffee. I found myself reading this book while at a café with tons of time to spare. No literary feat, but definitely a good mindless read to enjoy when you'd just like some time to unwind.

I unfortunately didn’t like this book very much. The redeeming qualities were the side characters and the happy ending. The main character annoyed me so much. She went off half-cocked all of the time, was a little too obsessive, was a bad friend, and she imagined all of these scenes from fictional mysteries. I’m still going to continue the series, but this book wasn’t that great for me.

Ok. I wanted it to be better and will try later books in the series (because my library just got them all). But I do hope that our main character grows a good bit, acquires some subtly and has an actual, credible reason for sleuthing in future episodes.

I was originally really excited to read this book because my cat's name is Coffee and she looks a lot like the cat on the cover. However, I was really disappointed with the book. The writing felt kind of stilted, and I thought it was a super predictable plot - including the big twist. The thing that bothered me the most was the characters. Krissy was such a brat - everything she did annoyed me. And Paul was a horrible cop. Also Krissy and Vicki complain about their cats a lot for people that supposedly love their pets?
I'm not a huge cozy mystery fan in general, but there are definitely better cozy mysteries out there than this one.

Received from NetGalley.

I got about 1/10th of the way through this one before I decided to bid it "adieu". I didn't even let the characters finish unpacking yet!

Here's a fun quotation from an obnoxious character:
"The library is a mess these days. No one seems to want to read real books anymore. They have their newfangled electronic devices and call that reading." Why does that make the library a mess? Never blame librarians for your tech phobias. They're here to help!

I would never discount a book altogether based on ignorance of libraries, but the physical descriptions and interactions so far are just ... bleh. For example: When the main character meets her neighbor, she describes him as the following: "His skin was the color of caramel and there was an upward slant to his eyes." I tire of reading descriptions for skin tones as food related, particularly if this character is a POC. And for a character who has just moved to a small town, this lady sure is quick to make negative assumptions about people. This one waddles, everyone glares or scowls, this one looks like a school marm, etc.

I'd rather read this book from the POV of the narrator's best friend, Vicki. Vicki's the one who was passionate about opening up the "Death by Coffee" bookstore and coffee house in the first place. Vicki's the one who is escaping from parental pressure, the one who loves her cat Trouble enough to let him hang in the store despite allergy concerns, the one who is eager to run a small business. I'm barely into this book and I'm latching onto her! Why can't she tell the story?? Our narrator seems "meh, okay" about running a business, and she encapsulates the stereotypes that we Millennials fight against (getting money from parents, no real ambition, shallow).

Decent mystery - I didn't figure things out until the very end. I did not click with the main character - she was a little too antagonistic for me.

I would say 3.75 stars. I didn’t hate it. I actually enjoyed 80% of it. I think the ending was just so random. I’ll likely read the rest of them.
