I was simply bored and didn’t care one bit about the characters or what was going to happen to them.

It was a fine enough book, I suppose, but there were several points in it that were quite questionable. While I do not have a particularly good view of the political positions held by most modern Mormons, there is genuine anti-Mormon bigotry present in this book, and it is accompanied by a similarly bigoted view towards the Native Americans represented. It was not as bad in the latter sense as many other books published at the time, but still left a strange taste in my mouth.

Finally finished.

I had a really hard time getting through this book and this is coming from someone who usually reads 19th century literature. At one point I even set it aside to read something else but, ultimately, I had to come back to it because I couldn't leave a book unfinished.

The reason that reading this book was like trudging through ankle deep mud, was because absolutely NOTHING happens until the last fifty pages! And even then, any action or forward movement of the plot was overshadowed by the SHEER amount of description. By the end I was skipping large sections because I just couldn't slodge through another page-long description of sage.

All I can say is seriously DO NOT READ THIS BOOK, unless you really really enjoy old westerns with no real story.
This guy came to Utah, met a girl, ran into some trouble, hiked the "Rainbow Trail" there was kind of a shoot out...don't remember how it ended..... Yeah...don't read.
