Such simple illustrations, such a heart-pounding journey... such a phenomenal picture book.

I had mixed feelings about this. Both my kids dismissed it as "boring" without even giving it a chance; I loved the art but didn't find the text particularly engaging (and the layout was sometimes confusing as to what order you were supposed to read the text blocks).

I thought this one was a little too long for a picture book, but both of my kids listened to the whole thing without complaint, AND asked questions when we finished so I know they paid attention. The pictures were beautiful, and now we have to google river locks to see how they work.

Derp. I'm bummed by this cook. I loved Elisha Cooper's Caldecott honor title of "Big Cat, Little Cat." I believe in that book. But this one....I just don't. It's too wordy. Perhaps other offering by the author are the same way. I was just expecting something really different.

Interesting that Cooper, a male, writes the story about a female achieving this fete. Something felt off about the size and typeface of the words to me; I think there could have been less white space. I did like the way that some pages had multiple illustrations to give the illusion of movement. I can't imagine canoeing into the ocean, or into New York City!

The watercolor illustrations in the book were lovely, but the book is waaaaay too long to hold a young reader's attention.

A lot going on with this text... the pacing feels a bit slow but perhaps the intent is to mimic the 20 day journey. Gorgeous illustrations.
