the most profound story of human suffering i have read in a while

I have a lot to say about this one.

To start, I think the funniest thing about Cormac McCarthy is that he seemingly does not care AT all about his reader; I respect (and enjoy) it a lot but totally see why some people can’t stand it.

Examples:
- A majority of the dialogue in this book take place entirely in Spanish with no translations (insanely funny to me)
- No punctuation, as all of his books feature, which makes for several re-reads during importation conversations
- Absolutely hammers on the same theme, idea, or concept over and over and over and then does it again
- Parts that should arguably be a book’s climax occur offscreen

Something I’ve noticed is that readers who dislike this book claim that (aside from it being slow), McCarthy really belabors a point or idea to the point where they’re sick of hearing it. This is a similar criticism of Walter M Miller’s style. I’ve found that I really don’t mind it from either author, though, and hardly notice it until other bring it up.

Most of this story actually occurs within the conversations Billy has with strangers he encounters on the road & the stories/knowledge he gains… almost an allegory for life, no???

(The ex-Mormon searching for “proof of God” was definetly my favorite)

Stranger in a strange land is one of my favorite tropes so I knew I was gonna enjoy this one. The first hundred pages or so with the she-wolf & the POV from the she-wolf were some of my favorite too.

Not sure which book I liked more in the Border Trilogy so far but I’m looking forward to Cities of the Plain
