Dark and disturbing, but so compelling.

I really wanted to like this book. I usually like horror and thrillers, but this was just over the top gross in some places and then boring in others. An interesting idea, but the writing just wasn't compelling enough for this type of story. Kirby Heyborne did an excellent job reading on the audio though.

I love the bright, dust-moted haze that Daniel Kraus seems to write in. I don't know how he does it, but it goes like this: as the extraordinary plot of a Daniel Kraus novel unfolds, complete with meteors or graverobbing, grievous injury, drugs, and insane people, our belief is never strained. The mood is numbed and nightmare-y, but with clear beautiful details and textures (lots of texture). You can't tell anyone what the book was about, just like you can't tell people what your dream was about, or else they'll think you're badly weird, or want to sleep with them.

So this book was really weird and crazy and I don't know if I liked it but I'm giving it four stars?? This is honestly how I feel about all of this guy's books and I don't think I'd really recommend it unless you're in the mood to read something...weird. Because it's weird!!!! I dunno. I would still stick to reading Zebulon Finch but that's ALSO real weird. Like real weird. I keep saying weird.
I will say that the relationships and characters and plot and literally everything were so much better than Rotters, which is the other book I've read by Daniel Kraus besides Zebulon. This book was much more compelling then that one and had much more likable characters that I actually rooted for. So yeah. Neat.

This book is so disturbing! I'm not even sure what to say about it.
