this was an amazing addition to the story and I'm so excited for the last book.
this is giving Poppy War vibes and I'm so here for it.

Character development was questionable. Amari and Zelie were getting on my nerves. Inan was just, it was smh the whole way through... the plot was good though! I do want to see how it ends.

I loved the first installment in this series. I don't know if I just waited too long to read this one, or if it really wasn't as good, but I had no putting it down for a couple of days at a time. It didn't grab me. I was interested every time I picked it up, but I wasn't in a hurry to pick it up.

If a book can be said to jump the shark, this book jumped and added a high kick. The beginning was slow and convoluted. Just when I was (finally) connecting emotionally with the characters, the story completely went off the rails. I reread the section because it was so shockingly inconsistent I thought I'd misunderstood pages. I finished it but only because I was on audio and on a long walk, otherwise I'd have DNF'd at 70%ish when the abrupt change happened.

Not bad for a sequel. Honestly the main drawback of this book for me was the continuously shifting priorities of all the characters. They rarely seemed on the same page which added to the conflict, but sometimes it came off as needless/avoidable. I am intrigued enough that I will probably still read the next book.
