I'M NOT OKAY!!!

This book is definitely 10/5 in my heart(!) but for the purpose of writing a review I'm giving it 4.75/5.

Post-apocalyptic/zombies is not the kind of books I like. However, I'm very glad I decided to read Hearing Red. I came across it on Goodreads on a list and the book cover had my attention. For an independently published book, the cover is better than many. And the main characters shown on the cover are not "masculine" which I prefer.

The book dedication already grabbed me from the start! We learn quickly that the world has been in an apocalyptic state off the page. The main characters met and decide to travel together because of different reasons. We learn about their pasts and how their lives have been in the current world.

I love Saff and Maddie equally and that is saying something! Their slow-burn romance is everything I hoped to read! They are strong and resilient despite their own demons and disabilities. And them only caring about each other's safety even when they are fighting just brings so many emotions to me! I'm so glad there is a happy ending. I would die if there weren't. I also love that this book is New Adult. I can't really do YA anymore. I prefer older protagonists and I know Maddie is probably a few years younger than Saff but at least they are not like 18 or 20.

One of the reasons why this book works for me is that although the world is in chaos after the outbreak, we don't see tons of zombie-fighting. There are some scenes and they are important but the focus is much more about how Saff and Maddie try their best to survive in this circumstance and how to admit their love for each other.

I gave the book 4.75/5 because of the writing and I wish there were more back story. As far as the writing goes, I think we can all agree that it's not a literary masterpiece. Some words and phrases are repeated quite often and done so obviously.  I wish we knew even a little bit more about their lives before the outbreak. And I wish the book was 80 pages longer(or way longer because I can't get enough of Saff and Maddie!). BUT ultimately I don't care about those flaws! I don't care if some scenes are predictable, I just want them all! I LOVE this book so much! I am really not okay after finishing this. I don't know what to do now and I already want to re-read it! I think Hearing Red will be a book that I will come back to regularly, maybe once a year.

This book was incredible. Fast paced and emotional, but the pacing was incredible. Loved Saff and Maddie so much. Last few chapters made me cry it was so intense and emotional.
