i was hoping for "Final Girl Support Group," but this was all my library had, so i settled
truly i don't know what i was expecting after having read Hendrix's "The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires," because i got sucked in AGAIN by a sweet cover and a cool premise that both did not deliver. it felt like it went all over the place, and the "horror" was more just gross? not really all that scary, just sickening (which can be done well in horror, but obvi this did not - hence the 2 stars)
idk it was better? maybe? than Southern Guide (less outwardly racist at least, but i could be wrong about that it's been over a year since i've read it), but just didn't do it for me.

TW for animal death, (like family dog death and it's very upsetting), and body horror

My bestie, Jordana, recommended this book to me, and I'm so glad I finally got around to reading it. It's rare to find a male author who writes women as people without being absolutely ridiculous about it, so it was a breath of fresh air to read about two completely normal teenage girls written by a man. I loved the story of how Gretchen and Abby became friends because it's so realistic. I bonded with my best friend over Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Gretchen and Abby bonded over E.T. I love it. The friendship, the '80s nostalgia, and the very realistic teenagers—all of it was great.

The Lemon Brothers were the highlight of this book. Bodybuilders for Jesus had me cracking up. Literally everything Christian said had me laughing. Sometimes God lets you hit rock bottom, so that you know that he is the rock at the bottom!!!

Highly recommend the movie and the book tbh. The movie was a good adaptation, and some of the changes they made were for the better. LIKE NO DOGS DYING.

This was the first horror book I have finished and I do understand the hype of Grady Hendrix. I am a horror movie fan and never read a horror novel but I did enjoy this one. Some parts were a little too much for me and disgusted/disturbed me ( ex: the tapeworms, max ).. But it was like I couldn't look away, I couldn't stop reading. I really enjoyed how it took place during the 80s and satanic panic. The writing was so descriptive that I could picture everything clearly. It was definitely chilling and creepy. I think what I enjoyed most about the book is the (possibly) queer-coded friendship between Gretchen and Abby. It warmed my heart the love they had for each other and how they never gave up on each other. I definitely think there should be a TW while reading this book. I am excited to see the movie adaption of the story.
