Decent book. I almost didn't continue in the beginning, but it got better halfway through

Penny dreadful is not my favourite style, but this was delightfully horrible nonetheless. I definitely need to keep reading McDowell's work. At first I thought I wasn't impressed with the writing, then I realised it was more the genre that I didn't gel with.

Katie and her parents were terrifying villains. Her clairvoyance added a paranoia to the experience that gave me chills every time Philo met a new person. The pure dread for anyone that interacted with Katie thoroughly rattled my brain whilst reading this. The depths of her violence, especially for animals, took this book from thriller to a true horror.
