I used this book to teach a unit on coding for my 4th-6th graders. They were pretty receptive to the book, and we did many of the activities that were in the book/on the website. RUBY programming must come from a different source: the book doesn't support actual coding, but gives a great entry into how computers work/think and is pretty amazing at breaking down (English) language to computer-ese...the type of language coders use to give computers instructions. But if you want to teach kids basic coding (as I did) you'll need another resource.

A cute book, I think it'll be fun for my niece when she's a little older.

The book is divided into fiction and nonfiction sections. That approach didn't work for me. The exercises were useful, but the final exercise combining everything didn't seem very relevant.
Nevertheless, the book is innovative and might have more appeal for a child.

Simple story of finding gems and friendship with connections to coding concepts. Includes an activity guide with exercises more directly related to coding skills.

A great introduction to analytical thinking and problem solving. Follow Ruby on an adventure in which she must hunt for clues and solve puzzles with readers given insight into her thought process and how she breaks down problems into individual steps and challenges. With additional puzzles to solve at the end, this book is perfect for parents and younger readers to enjoy together.

Now that I’ve read this book, I think I understand coding now. It’s a great introduction to the computational thinking necessary to understand how to code for kids.

Charming little book. The story was ok, but the best part of the book is in the end, where you can practise thinking like a programmer. The tasks are simple, easy and helpful.
