Amor Towles

I kept finding more time in the day to read. Would recommend this book. There’s sadness to parts of the story, but it’s an engaging read.

If I could read an entire book told in Billy’s pov, I WOULD!!!
My baby I loved him!!!

An epic novel. At times frustrating, everything that could go wrong did but I love his writing.

4.5 ⭐

The characters were beautifully developed and you could feel their emotion through the pages. The story was disjointed in parts that just didn't flow throughout the whole book. Was it a great read? Absolutely! Just wasn't quite 5 stars for me.

Towles is just a good, old-fashioned storyteller.

I enjoyed A Gentleman in Moscow so I was happy to give The Lincoln Highway a try. In some ways the books are very similar; Towles definitely takes his time with the story and gives much detail and background to each scene. I liked this to a point but found myself skimming some parts; I could probably cut 100 of the 588 pages. The story was good, I enjoyed the multiple perspectives and was happy to not predict every twist and turn. I take a bit of issue with some of the characters: Billy was a bit too precocious for me, Emmett a bit too much the honourable multitalented hero, and I really didn’t like Wooly’s development. Duchess was the most developed and complex; interestingly, he was the only one whose chapters were written in the 1st person. I didn’t entirely care for the ending but I’m also not sure what should have happened. Overall, I’m not disappointed in the time I gave to reading it but I don’t think I’ll be rushing to read any more from this author.

I so wanted to love this book, like I loved his other books.

I almost didn't finish this book. Because I was reading it on my Kindle I didn't realize how long it was. After a few days, when I checked my progress I was disheartened to find I had barely made a dent in it. I was interested in the journey Emmett and Billy were going to take to California, but was not interested in a trip with Duchess. I almost gave up but decided to read the end to see what happened.
By jumping around and concentrating on the characters I liked, I actually finished it, and liked it. I might have even given it 4 stars, had it only been based on the parts I read, but it was far too long, and I jumped over a good 1/2 of the book.
I am not sure if I would recommend this book, but if you do read it, give yourself permission to skip around, if you want.

I loved Towles’ prior books so much that I really didn’t think this one could live up to the hype for me. Something about the title/cover/ blurb gave me a meh feeing so I passed my pre-order hardback on to my parents before I read it. They couldn’t stop raving about it so I started it once I got it back. I was hooked from the first chapter (I mean, it is actually the tenth). I was torn between wanting to tear through it because the plot was riveting but the writing and characters were so good I intentionally slowed down to savor it.
I thought the alternating POV sections from the characters was highly effective at really helping you get to know them. And what a great cast of characters - I have a hard time thinking of the last time I read a book where I cared so deeply about that many people - Billy, Emmet, Duchess, Wooly, Sally and Ulysses. And what a great villain in Pastor John.
The ending was so satisfying. It really was smart and brought everything together. Some surprise, some inevitable sadness you knew was coming some how, and a whole lot of hope. Masterful. I can’t wait to see what Mr. Towles does next and I will read it first before passing it along!!!

Amor Towles is one of my favourite writers. I fell in love with his prose after a gentleman in Moscow. And now this true blue American book, very clean, very fresh, a very good story. All heart for woolly!
