This one moved pretty slow at the beginning (and kind of in the middle), but by the end I was hooked

I kindof adore Naomi Novik. Uprooted remains to be one of my favourite books, then I thoroughly enjoyed Spinning Silver and now I've had a ball reading this one. Her characters are funny, complex, and entertaining. I really enjoyed the setting of the Scholomance, it felt incredibly well fleshed out and imaginative. El was such a hilarious character to see the school from and her slow movement into making friends made me tear up at points because it was so accurate in articulating the feeling of finally being included (the trepidation, the disbelief but also the excitement).
I thought this book was nicely structured although occasionally the flashbacks to El's past and her inner thoughts were quite long meaning the pacing sometimes felt a little off. That being said, because I liked her so much as a character I found it easy to tolerate but if I had liked her less it would have been more of a sticking point I think.
I didn't like the last line
but I'm excited to continue with the series.

Also unrelated but in the back of this book it says Novik was one of the founders of Archive of Our Own which is kind of wild.

This book was wild, full of twists and turns I audibly reacted to, but to my husband's confusion. 😂 It was fascinating, watching El work through her view of the world as she actually gets to know people and gets a chance to see new perspectives outside her own. I really enjoyed it.
