The maps could have been better, showing more street names, bus stops, recognizable landmarks, or anything that helps you get back on track once a little lost. Other than that, this is a really good and comprehensive guide, covering enough locations for multiple long trips to this fine country. Don't miss the "Understand Japan" appendix - excellent reading for those train trips in between your destinations.

Lonely Planet provides the best travel guides. I find every information needed and much more, such as history of Japan and culture insights.

I read more of this than I necessarily expected to, given that I'm rarely interested in seeing "the sights" when I travel. There were two or three places suggested here which my 'local guide' hadn't heard of (mostly gardens/shrines in Kyoto) which were indeed cool and worth the trip. I've never really used travel guides before, but maybe I should?
