Satire! Lush and gritty and full of unpleasant smells and sights. Overall? Liked it.
after seeing this book all over my bookstagram endlessly and with it being compared to ottessa moshfegh’s my year of rest and relaxation, i knew i just had to pick this one up and so i finally did after months and months of delaying and yet again being reminded of its existence by my good friend, afi as we were having a talk of our never ending tbr.
i can definitely see the resemblance between the characters in both the new me and my year of rest and relaxation. just two women, burnt out by life and looking for a way out of it except both choosing a different path. with millie’s being just existing between all the chaos around her, silently questioning and responding to the chaos that happens in front of her eyes. she is downright unlikable and what’s insane is that i related to her so much to the point where i reached my peak of embracing the fact that i am that very unlikable character in my own story. our thoughts were simply one and the same and it is scary.
halle butler’s writing was fairly easy to get into as i read this pretty fast considering how busy i am today and the fact that i started this book early this morning, on the train ride journey to campus and next thing you know, i’m home and finishing this book once and for all. though there were some parts of the book that i find draggy and boring, i loved the vibes nevertheless. there’s no really concrete plot to this one in my opinion as it seems to be more of millie’s character study but if you’re a fan of ottessa moshfegh’s books, the others were right—this one is definitely for you. i was conflicted between giving it a 3.5 stars or a 4, but i settled on the round up.

This book is short and sharp. No strong plot, but lots of ~vibes.~ Halle Butler writes neuroticism in such an apt and compelling way. I’d listen to her characters’ endearing self-deprecating thoughts all day, and feel like I’m amongst real friends and enemies while doing so. Butler is officially on my radar and I will be putting all of her backlog on my TBR RN!!
Thoughts:
- OUAT mention!!
- Honestly her thinking about crashing out is so valid
- This book is essentially a 30 year old woman having a midlife crisis
- This book has been marketed as a comedy but it honestly just makes me sad. All of the thoughts that the women are having are in the perception of being trivial, sometimes shallow or over dramatic but it’s real feelings I think all women have experienced from time to time. Even though these characters are fake it seems exploitive to put it in a light to make fun of them when it’s raw and real
