4.5 read. What a great story. I am excited to see what happens next.

3.5/5

A beautiful sci-fi/fantasy take on this YA princess and the pauper story. I will immediately be jumping into book 2.

Thank you to my local library and Libby for providing this audiobook.

1.75 stars-Super bland, with a very clichéd plot and little to no purpose behind 90% of the chapters. I was annoyed/bored most of the time and skim-read the last 100 pages because I couldn't commit myself to it any longer.

Trigger Warnings: physical abuse, kidnapping, cultural erasure, death, murder, grief, forced body altercations,

Mirage was one of my most anticipated reads of 2018, and it did not disappoint. Somaiya Daud’s writing is absolutely beautiful and kept me enthralled throughout the novel. Mirage is an own voices Moroccan inspired science fiction/fantasy story, with diverse characters and a star-crossed romance. The world building in this book is so well done. Mirage is a book that will stick with you long after finishing it, this book will definitely be on my end of the year favourites list.

Mirage is told in the first person from Amani’s point of view. Amani is a wonderful character. It is great to see how she grows, and changes throughout the novel. I loved seeing the romance develop and I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book. Maram is such a complex villain and it was interesting to see the dynamics between her and Amani.

Overall, Mirage is an amazing political sci-fi/fantasy story with great characters and beautiful writing. If you love sci-fi/fantasy stories definitely pick up a copy!

Thank you to Hachette Australia for sending me a copy in exchange for an honest review.

Though I wanted to read this book I wasn't sure what I'd think. It seemed like it would be predictable but turned into an emotional rollercoaster where I actually liked Maram.

I'm actually sad this was so short and need the next one!

Amani and marams character and relationship development make this book incredible! If you’d of told me a few chapters into this book I’d of loved maram I’d straight up call you crazy, but she’s so unlikable and unlovable that all the tiny bits of information into the real her and so much more powerful. Also, fuck nadine.

Mind numbingly boring. DNF at 50%

My only gripe is this needed a glossary of terms. The Indian/Arab terms threw me for a loop and I didn’t understand what was happening.

2.5/5

I liked the main character and the romance throughout the book, and it's a great premise. I just feel like nothing really happened? thankfully there will be more than one book cause this one felt like it had no purpose other than to set up the remainder of the series. It was quite slow and when I thought it was going to pick up, it would once again flat line.
I also felt that there were missed opportunities for great twists and added storyline to the plot and characters.
It's a good idea but it fell short for me. Although I am curious to see how it progresses.
