While I found nothing wrong with this book, it didn't capture my attention. The world was lush and vibrant, and I did enjoy the way that the world was constructed and explained. This book is very trope-filled however, and just didn't pull on tropes that I love. I would recommend this for those looking for YA that reads a little bit younger, or for someone that loves classic YA tropes.

Die Welt von Amani und Maram ist ein Mix aus Fantasyelementen, mythologischen und poetischen Teilen und ein ganz klein wenig SciFi.
Geprägt ist sie von Unterdrückung, sowie Kolonialismus und orientiert sich geschichtlich an den „Jahren der Führung“ zwischen 1960 und 1990 in Marokko, als König Hassan II das Volk mit harter und willkürlicher Hand regierte.

„Mirage“ ist eine Geschichte, die stark von den Charakteren und ihren Beziehungen untereinander lebt.
Sowohl Amani als auch ihre Gegenspielerin Maram sind sehr facettenreich und beide haben ihre guten und ihre schlechten Seiten. Die Grenze zwischen Gut und Böse ist nicht immer einfach zu ziehen und je mehr Zeit sie verbindet, umso stärker ähneln sie sich nicht nur optisch, sondern auch in ihren Persönlichkeiten,
Warum die beiden Mädchen wie eineiige Zwillinge aussehen, wird nicht erklärt und wirkt deswegen nicht unbedingt überzeugend. So etwas dürfte in der Realität äußerst selten vorkommen und hätte meiner Meinung nach einer kurzen Erklärung bedurft, um die Leser nicht irritiert zurückzulassen.
Dennoch sind die Figuren sympathisch. Es gab eigentlich niemanden, den ich in diesem Buch nicht gemocht hätte, zumal der Antagonist eher das System als eine einzige Person ist.

„Mirage“ ist unserer Welt sehr ähnlich und wirkt dennoch wegen seiner mythologischen Symbolik fremd genug, um uns als Leser von Anfang bis Ende zu faszinieren.
Die Hauptcharaktere sind vielschichtig, emotional und haben Hoffnungen und Ängste, die sie für uns Leser verwundbar und liebevoll machen.

Leider fand ich die Plotideen ein wenig schwach. Ja, sie orientieren sich an historischen Ereignissen, aber die Vergangenheit schreibt nicht immer die interessantesten Geschichten.
Die Situation in der wir uns befinden ist zwar nicht schön, wirkt aber auch nicht sehr bedrohlich. Selbst die Szene mit Amanis Eltern vermittelte keine echte Gefahr und hätte deutlicher gezeichnet werden können.
Auch das Ende ist nicht ganz das, was ich mir erhofft hatte, nachdem der Anfang mit der Entführung des Mädchens so stark war. Ich weiß, dass es sich um eine Fortsetzung handelt und dass der Schluss dieser Geschichte auf den Beginn einer neuen hinweisen soll, aber dennoch werden die Erwartungen der Leser relativ hochgeschraubt und zum Schluss ein wenig enttäuscht.
FAZIT
„Mirage“ ist ein Debütwerk und deswegen von ein paar Fehlern durchzogen, Nichtsdestotrotz ist es auf seine Weise einzigartig und hebt sich ein wenig von typischen YA-Werken ab.
Mir hat das Buch ausgesprochen gut gefallen und ich bin sehr gespannt auf den zweiten Band, der nächstes Jahr erscheinen soll.

This was a surprisingly decent read. Through the beginning I was extremely bored, they kept throwing in titles and descriptions that seemed unecessary. This definitely hindered my enjoyment.
However, the book got amazingly addictive towards the ending, and I cannot wait to see what happens in book two. The cliffhanger was brilliant!

This was a solid read. The writing was amazing, and I loved the Arab/Islamic influence. I can tell the author was influenced by the Palestinian occupation, so reading this book was so personal, since I'm Arab myself. I did find it to be rather slow, however, and I wasn't a fan of the romance; it felt too much like insta-love to me. The world-building was amazing, though, and it was so interesting reading about the complex relationship between Amani and Maram. Most of all, it was just amazing to read about a YA novel about my culture, because that is so rare.

I got this book for 5.40 USD at a nearby bookstore. I was enticed by the book cover and the synopsis, but I postponed reading this book. I only read it 6 months later after buying it.
The crown of Dihya had been stripped from me, my face changed, my body broken. But I was not a slave and I was not a spare. I was my mother’s daughter, and I would survive and endure. I would find my way back home.
I love how this book is very character-driven and fast-paced. For months, I have been reading books that were plot-driven to a fault and painfully slow-paced. In that sense, Mirage was refreshing to read. I was very interested in Maram's complex character. She is not simply a bad villain, she has a good back story. Also, Amani is a well-rounded character; she grew on me as I progressed through the book. Amani and Idris's romance, however, was unexciting. I kind of thought that it would be Maram and Amani that will have a romantic relationship. That is okay for me because I did not read this book for the romance.
And this, poetry like this, was all we had to preserve our stories, our music, our history.
This book touched upon subjects of colonialism and the elimination of indigenous tribes. I was so impressed by how Amani's dying culture was established and showed in the story. But, I became confused by the terminologies used in the book. Makhzen. Tesleet. Daan. I wrote all those terms down and defined them though.
As for the writing, it was fantastic. It was very evident just from the first page that Daud is incredibly skilled in writing stories. I am looking forward to getting the second book! I wonder what will happen next.
