The author, broken by his attempt to help Syrian refugees on the Greek island of Lesbos, hands the narration over to a first generation Lebanese-American lesbian trans-woman doctor whose experiences with the refugees and their senseless suffering reconnects her to her brother and memories of her childhood.

My friend who recommended this book to me read it in a weekend. It took me almost 3 months (not that I didn’t like it, I was just very busy)! It reads surprisingly well as a series of short vignettes but I wish I had been able to dig in and devour all of it in a weekend — I think it would have stuck with me more.
